CV in German: German CV template and how to write it
How to write a CV in German: format, sections, dates and languages according to the German Federal Employment Agency. Below is a template with a translation of every sentence.
How to write a CV in German
In German a CV is called a Lebenslauf. It has a table layout and starts with your current or most recent job.
- At the top your contact details; you can add your position under your name.
- Kurzprofil: a few sentences about you, without using “I”.
- Berufserfahrung: period, position, company and town, with short points on your tasks.
- Weiterbildungen, Ausbildung, then Kenntnisse: languages, computer skills, driving licence, certificates.
- At the end the town, date and signature.
Photo, date of birth, length
A photo is optional but still common: add only a professional, recent one. Date of birth and citizenship are up to you; you can leave out marital status and children. Length: 1 page with short experience, 2 at most.
Dates and languages
Write periods as MM/YYYY, always with the month, e.g. 03/2019 – 06/2023. Describe languages in words, not stars: “Deutsch – Grundkenntnisse”. Never overstate your level, because the employer will check it.
Why a translator alone is not enough
An online translator converts words, but it does not arrange your CV according to German customs or fit it to the job ad. With CVabroad you write in English and point to an offer, and you get a Lebenslauf with a translation of every sentence, so you know what you are sending.

Questions and answers
Can I make a German CV for free?
The example on this page and the match check are free. A finished CV for a specific job ad, with a translation and with files, costs €9 for 30 days, one payment.
Is there a German CV template to download, in Word or PDF?
You can copy the layout from this page. You download a finished CV for a specific job ad from the app as a PDF and a Word file.
Do I need to know German?
Not to prepare the documents: you write in English and see every sentence translated. If the ad requires the language, the app asks about your level and enters it truthfully.
Must a CV for a German company have a photo?
No. The guide of the German employment agency says a photo is voluntary. Better no photo than a poor one.
Can I work in Germany without a permit?
According to EURES, citizens of the EU, the EEA and Switzerland do not need a work permit. Others need a residence document that allows work, such as a visa or an EU Blue Card. We don't decide whether you have this right: check your document, because the employer will ask about it.
Will my qualifications be recognised in Germany?
That is for the employer or the competent authority. The documents state them as you have them, and we suggest what is worth asking.
Where these rules come from
We wrote down the rules from official sources: Bundesagentur für Arbeit, Bewerbungskompass „Bewerbung leicht gemacht” (2026); IHK Pfalz, Tipps Lebenslauf; IHK Arnsberg, Erfolgreich bewerben.
