How to write a søknad

  • 1 A4 page at most, simple and short.
  • At the top the sender, on the right the place and date, e.g. “Oslo, 06.11.2026”, below that the addressee.
  • Title: “Søknad på stilling som [position] hos [company]”.
  • First sentence: where you saw the ad and which position you are applying for.
  • Why this position and what you can do, with examples from work, directly against the requirements in the ad.
  • A short ending: how to contact you, when you can start and that you would be glad to come to an interview.
  • “Med vennlig hilsen” without a comma, your full name below.

How to start when you don't know the name

The template on the state service utdanning.no has no greeting: the text starts straight after the title. When you know the person, the Language Council gives just the full name or “Kjære Målfrid Språkerud”, without a comma. For an unknown person “Hei” can sound too familiar.

Do you always need a letter

Nav shows that employers often ask for both a CV and a letter. EURES adds that some companies are dropping letters. Check the ad: if it says nothing, the decision is yours.

Questions and answers

Can I write the letter without knowing Norwegian?

Yes. You write in English and get the letter in Norwegian with a translation of every sentence. We never add language skills you don't have.

How long should a søknad be?

1 A4 page at most. Nav advises writing briefly and preparing a new letter for each offer.

Is there a comma after “Med vennlig hilsen”?

The Language Council says no, when the phrase stands on its own line above the name. The template on utdanning.no has a comma; we use the Language Council's form.

Is this for a visa or university application?

No. This example is for applying for a job, not for a visa, an embassy or a university.
